WELL, THAT COULD HAVE GONE BETTER. CHRIS GUSTAFSON'S PITCHING DEBUT WAS DOMINANT, PETER AND GIGS WERE DOMINANT TOO, BUT ONLY 50% OF THE TIME. THE OTHER 50%, SOMEWHAT LESS SO. WE MISSED RICK DUBE.
It seemed like it might be a tight one. Chris Gustafson, after giving up two unearned runs without a hit in the first, proved that his re-learning curve is a short one. He allowed only one hit and struck out five in 5IP against a team that most would concede are at least "pretty good," judging by their ability to repeatedly make the championship game and go undefeated before being put through "The Ringer." He left the game with the Wobblies trailing 3-2.
The Wobblies' defense was pretty bad on the day, in fact really bad, but also sometimes extraordinary-- Mike Moravek threw out a runner at the plate on what one would think was a routine sacrifice fly, double plays were turned, but none of it was good enough to overcome the muffing and booting.
Gigstad's belief that the Mudslingers' lily white skin could use a little blush didn't help any as he managed to hit the maximum number of batters within 2/3rds of an inning. Taunting them as "Pink Boys" and referring to individual batters he hit as "Pinky' was perhaps uncalled for, but is reflective of the phone book ripping, testosterone fueled style of baseball the Wobblies are known for.
Next week: The Dodgers, where we hope to finally cause Martin to have an aneurysm over a called third strike or something equally trivial.
