2022 Midseason Player Recap

#7 Sam Shoemaker

If his name seems familiar, it's because you've seen it sitting at #2 on the league-wide leaderboard for batting average.  Sam's been a dependable hitter over his 14 seasons with the Bombers, but this year has been a breakout in a big way. In every game he's hit in save 1, he's recorded a pair of hits. He's already got 2 doubles, tying a career high, and his first triple since 2008. He's on an easy pace to break his season high mark for runs scored, sitting currently at 13 and is slashing a ludicrous .542/.593/.708. Have a year kid.

#8 Jimmy Shoemaker

Not content to let the senior Shoemaker filch all the glory, Jimmy is not-so-quietly putting on a career season himself. Jim is slashing .474/.630/.579 in the early half of the season, looks assured to reach the 100 hit milestone before July is out, and is on pace to break personal records for RBIs and TB's, with help from his first triple since 2010. Jim has also been a stellar defensive fill in around the infield, especially at first this season with McGibbon retiring from the position.

#37 Patrick Sutherland

Pat is essentially going to reset the bar on every single season hitting stat he has this year. He's boasting a .375/.524/.437 slash line, and has already set career marks for runs scored and walks drawn. He's got plenty of time to top his single season hit tally, and is just 1 RBI short of his career mark in that category as well. He's reached base in every game he's played this year, and has only failed to score in one of them.

#33 John Connolly

John's been a lightning rod at the top of the Bombers lineup since joining the team full time in 2019. He hit .446 in his second full year with the team, and looked on pace to remain a fixture in the #1 spot for the Nation. Last year was always going to be tough to top, but if John hasn't had another incredible year at the plate, he's had a pretty good one. He's tallied 11 hits so far this year, 3rd on the squad, and added 11 runs scored, tied for 2nd and behind only S. Shoemaker. He shares the team lead for stolen bases with 5, and a 100% success rate on attempts. Not enough can be said about his consistent presence in left field either; he's one of the few players on the team to play all 12 of the Bomber's games in a defensive position, and his consistent presence in left field shouldn't be understated as the Bombers have had to combat shorthandedness quite a bit in the month of June.

#4 Alex Gabriel

We'd be remiss if we didn't talk about the central nervous system of our entire organization, Alex Gabriel. Our tenured manager has had an interesting year at the plate. Though his hit count stands a little lower than years past at 6, all but one of them has been an extra base hit, which includes two triples. To put that in perspective, he has a highest difference between average and slugging on the team, with a modest .250 average and impressive .524, with a different of .274 points, higher than anyone else on the squad. He's also just 2 back of the Bomber's franchise record for career stolen bases, with plenty of time to make the record. Some of his best work this year though has been on the mound. While he's still looking for his first win after 2 starts, he's posting career lows in all the right places; WHIP, OBA, and especially in ERA. He's also sporting a career best K:BB ratio this year at just over 2:1. Alex's on field contributions are no means overshadowed by all the work he puts in for the team to keep the lights on and us playing each week. Hat's off skip.

#20 Alex Selim

Alex is having what I would call a quietly great year. Certainly no surprise from a career .400 hitter, even if the average is a touch below .350 through the first half. Alex has been the best on the team for putting the ball in play, with the fewest strikeouts of any Bomber with at least 30 plate appearances. He's 4th on the team with 10 hits collected, and 8 runs and 3 stolen bases on 3 attempts to go along with it. What's maybe even been more impactful than his time at the dish has been his time in the field this year, as he's having what I would consider to be one of his best defensive seasons in memory, and has been a huge relief in covering for another defensive titan at short in Kai Goellner. It's years like this I wish we were able to calculate the number of runs a player has prevented by his defense, as I'm certain Alex would be at the top of the roster.

#23 Jack Yeakel

To listen to Jack talk, you'd think he was having a worse season than he is. Maybe by his standards the offensive stats are down a little this year, but that doesn't make them anything to scoff at. He's posting a solid .333/.417/.850 line, and has notched 9 RBI's, 3rd on the team. He's also sacrificed his well-being more than anyone else on the team this year, taking 3 pitches off the body. Jack has also been called on to play the field more traditionally than his DH designation would assume, and has had two really impressive games playing second base in particular. The defensive contributions that have been mentioned are no small thing to the team this year, as June was very much a patchwork month for the roster with vacations and time off, and Jack has really stepped up to help fill some gaps and keep the Bombers near the top of the division against some very good teams.

#11 Zach Gengler

Another player who might downplay his year at the plate; Zach has, like Jack, had some key contributions at the dish, namely his team leading 10 RBI and team leading 8 walks, and I think most of us would agree it probably should be closer to 10 walks (through no fault of his own). He's poised to set career marks in both categories if the trend holds, even after a career season last year hitting .414 with 24 hits. Zach has only had 1 game all year where he has not reached base, and his marks for clutch hitting have been strong; picking up RBI's in 6 of his 9 games this year. Zach will remain an important fixture in the middle of the lineup in the second half, and with McGibbon returning next week, the Bomber's middle lineup is looking in pretty good shape.

#9 Chris Lyons

Hard to find praise for Chris that hasn't already been found. You know what he's done from the mound. League leading 6-0 record, just snapped a streak of 13 consecutive complete game wins last week (not for lack of win, but for an inning of rest), 51 K's (2nd in the league) to a paltry 14 walks, and an opponent batting average of .212. Chris has settled comfortably into the ace role in his third full year under the moniker, and still looks to be trending up. What's been maybe as impressive this year is his rebound at the plate. After a year of struggles in 2021, he's now leading the team in both hits and runs scored, sports a solid 2:1 BB:K ratio, and holds a near team leading .437 average. At this point you know what you're going to get out of his arm, but his return to promenance in the batting order has been a key factor in the Bomber's 9-3 record right now.

#10 Cody Copeland

Career stats are definitely a theme for a lot of Bombers this year, and Cody is no exception. While the tally isn't exorbitant, he's notched 5 RBI (a career high) in his 6 hits this year, and is trending his average in the right direction; currently sitting at a palindromic .333. If he trends the way he's going so far, he could set career marks for hits as well. He's also made a huge stride in a key area; strikeouts, having gone down via such just one time this year. The bottom of the Bomber's lineup has done a lot to pick up slack for the top when needed, and has been turning over the order all year, due in no small part to his at bats. He's also played in all but one game this year, even after spraining his ankle and returning to action the next week. It's been said before in this feature, but with the Bomber's roster in flux through a lot of June, there are kudos that deserve to be served for the guys who've been able to man the field for us over the last few weeks.

#25 Joe Masrud

Joe's MO at the plate over the last two seasons has been small presence, big impact. With just 6 at bats, Joe's racked up 4 hits, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Over his last two seasons, he's batting 8-11 (.728), and hasn't been struck out for the last 3 seasons. You can see in the Hamm's Heroes from last week what he did in his last stint in the lineup, and it was something. Perhaps what you Joe most for is his pitching though. The long time Bomber's ace is having a productive year on the mound as well. Posting a 2-0 record in 3 starts, allowing just 5 ER in 12 innings, and has a solid 15:4 K:BB ratio. With a lot of big games to come, Joe's solid spot hitting and ability to create outs on the mound will continue to make a difference in the Bomber's push to a first round bye.

#2 Max Selim

While the Highland Hammer might be on hiatus in Europe for most of the rest of the season, he leaves the Bombers with a half season's worth of contributions to our 9 wins. Sitting currently with an even .500 average, he played a huge role in the Bomber's razor thin win against the Sea Donkey's, where he tallied 3 hits and 3 RBI en route to an 8-7 win. His 8 RBI are still holding near the top of the team lead even after 2 weeks away. His defense has been a boon to the team as well, most notably when he played 4 positions in 1 game to help offset some injuries. The Bomber's lineup is definitely better for his presence, and the team will look forward to his return in August, just in time for our 2022 playoff run.

#5 Andrew Granias

While he may not have recorded an at bat yet this season, there's no disputing that Andrew is still at the heart and soul of the Bombers. Our perennial center fielder is still one of the best route runners in the league, and the team is looking forward to having him back through the rest of the season, not just for his on field contributions, but for the life he brings to the dugout as well.

#29 Joey Frasl

Joe's made some contributions this year in ways you may not have expected. He's been a stellar fielder this year, most notably with some solid games playing second base, and just this last week got a chance to prove there may not be as much rust on him as he thought. With just 2 at bats this year, he's managed to square up a pair of hits, and notch 4 RBI on top. His return the mound after 3 seasons wasn't any less impressive, going an inning with no runs allowed and a K. Joe's established himself as a great role player for the team, a great "clubhouse guy", and as he gets more exposure, look to see some of those stats start to climb.

#55 Kai Goellner

The stats haven't quite been there yet for Kai, due to an injury that's kept him sidelined the last few weeks, but his return to the team in week 7 is going to give the Bombers a huge amount of depth. Kai has been one of the league's most sure handed shortstops throughout his career, and his presence has been missed the last 3 weekends. His strong eye and ability to make contact at the plate also give the Bombers a lot of options in the bottom of the lineup that Gabriel will surely be glad to have back. Hats off to the guy for getting himself healthy and ready to go just in time for the 2nd half playoff run, another player the Bombers will be thankful to have back both in the field and in the lineup.

Coming 7/8

Or 7/9 actually

#34 Brenden McGibbon

It says a lot that Brenden has only logged 6 games this year and is near the top of the team lead in runs scored, doubles, and RBI. It's no secret at this point that he's as much at the heart of our offense as anybody, and the team is looking forward to having him back potentially as soon as the 10th. If you've ready the section below, you'd also know that Brenden is just one decent game away from an historic milestone, in 300 hits; a feat which just a small handful of TCMABL 18+ players have achieved in their career. Keep an eye on the box score folks, you won't want to miss your chance to witness history.

#xx Jason Fogel

Jason is still a bit of an unknown for the Bombers. Having appeared in just one game this year after signing with the team initially in the ill-fated 2020 season, Jason was brought on to fill the gap in innings pitched left by Will Grodzicki's departure. While there's still time to get a look at what Jason can do, I myself am as uninformed as you are as to where his potential may take him.

#17 Will Grodzicki

Yep, he's still part of the team. We're lucky to get him for a few games each year (sadly not enough for playoff eligibility), but Will looked in mid-season form after just his first inning of work since 2021. Can you imagine a Bombers with Will and Chris both in their prime? I often do, and it often gives me chills.

#47 Trevor Copeland

After a slow start to the year, a very productive week 6 has Trevor in a good position to make a few career marks with some of this other teamates. Having scored 8 runs already (one of them with his own two feet!) and 10 RBI, tying a career season mark, and hauling the batting average back to near .300 a few more games trending in the direction he ended in week 6 could see him make one of his best offense seasons since 2017 a reality.

The 2018 Weekly Hamm's Hero Handouts

The Hamm's Hero Handouts are weekly awards given to players in 4 categories to recognize them for either fantastic play in a given category, or more often, a ridiculously embarassing event that contributes to the brand of Bombers Baseball that makes us so fun to watch.

7/29 vs. Giants

Hamm's Hacker

Chris Lyons (Chris ensured a Game 2 victory with an early base clearing double on a monster shot to centerfield, Chris earning the Hacker is slowly become a theme as he is due to take the ball for a ride every time he steps in the box.)

Hamm Handed Defensive Player of the Week - Andrew Granias and Jack Yeakel (In a game where there was really only a need for a pticher and catcher thanks to Wlll Grodzicki's dominace, int the bottom of the 7th on back to back pitches, Granz and Jack flashed stellar leather to help preserve a shutout in Game 2 with two tremoundous diving catches.)

Hamm's Haphazard Hustler

Kai Goellner (After a long weekend of enjoying the company of relatives both near and distant, Kai hustled to make Game 2 and not only flashed brilliant glove and arm during his first outing at 3rd base but also provided the perfect mid-afternoon cap of Hamm's)

Grown Ass Man of the Week

Trevor Copeland (In his first action in almost 6 weeks due to an unfortunate injury, he immediately puts the bad wrist to the test while making a beauty of a play on a throw up the line at first base to make the play and apply the tag, all while keeping healthy)

7/9/17 vs. Ducks

After taking a week off to drink beer and blow stuff up, the Bombers got back onto a baseball field to attempt to do both of those things, both literally and figuratively, but in a baseball sense. Now fans of the Nation know that the Bombers are going to drink beer no matter what, it's the blowing it up part that sometimes doesn't pan out. This was not one of those pans.

With early season seeding implication, the Bombers marched out to Vadnais Heights to take on the Ducks in the TCMABL game of the week. The stakes were second place, with the Bombers needing a sweep to take possesion. In the event you did not want to read the rest of this, the Bombers did sweep.

In game 1, the Bombers would shake off the rust of two weeks and get on the board immediately. Very immediately, in fact, as Max Selime, eschewing tradition leadoff maxims, swung at the first pitch of the game and rapped it into the outfield for a single. Brenden McGibbon would move him into scoring position with hit 199, and a passed ball would do the rest. That lead would hold into the third.

Joe got his usual game 1 start on Sunday, despite looking as though he drove straight to the field from the Burning Man Festival. Wildly effective would be the best way to describe it. I wouldn't call it labored, nor would I call it cruised, but he got through the first two innings without a run scoring, working out of a bases loaded spot in the second. The third inning though was a little messier. Two walks to start the inning, followed by single - walk - hit batsman, and a sac fly, in that order, would plate a trio of runs, and give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.

There are many ways to make a game exciting, and while the Bombers wouldn't score again until the 4th, fans and players alike got to bear witness to one hell of a milestone, as Brenden McGibbon picks up his 200th career hit, ripping a single into right field. A round of beers and a round of congratulations are in order for Brenden, who joins just 6 other players in the TCMABL 18+ league who have accomplished that feat since the stat era in 2007. From all of us here in the Nation, join us in congratulating a legendary Bomber, an amazing baseball player, and a great teammate on a well earned and incredible milestone.

With the vibes from that moment resonating throughout the dugout, the Bombers would start to mount the comeback. A single run in the 4th for the Bombers off a Grodzicki single and a bit of station to station running on 6-3 put outs, and a wild pitch to plate the run. The 5th was a bit more traditionally exciting. An error and a walk to Goellner and McGibbon put two runners on, and what looked like the start to a promising inning took a swing the other way after back to back strikeouts had the runners still stuck on base and now two outs. Fortunately, clutch hitting is much more fun than scoring with nobody out. Sam Shoemaker and Will Grodzicki would pick up back to back RBI singles to score the tying and go ahead runs.

That lead, however, was short lived. A pair of walks, followed by a single, would bring about the game's second tie score, and chase Joe from the game after 4 and a third innings. Coming in in relief was Alex Gabriel, with what would be his best outing of the year so far. Getting out of bases loaded in that inning with just the one run allowed, he would close down the Duck's offense over the next two and two thirds, keeping them away from the plate while the Bombers went to work on the sticks.

Andrew Granias used his volumptuous rear to take a pitch to start the inning, then taking a base to get himself in scoring position as the go ahead run. However, it was going to take clutch hitting again to get it done, as the next two batters would result in outs. BMac, earning his GAMotW award, picks up #201 and tacks on the go ahead RBI to boot. Sutherland follows up with a single, and Hedlund draws a walk to load up the bases, and sets the stage for the biggest hit of the day, courtesy of Sam Shoemaker, who would knock in a pair of insurance runs, and cap off the game's final scoring to conclude things 7-4 for an exciting game one win, worthy of the GotW title.

Hero honors in the first half of the day go to BMac (3-4, 2 runs, RBI), Sam Shoemaker (2-4, 3 RBI), and Will Grodzicki (3-4, R, RBI). Don't forget Al Gabes, picking up his first win on the year in relief, going 2.2 scoreless innings and keeping the Bombers in striking distance long enough to cap off the victory.

Now, there are a lot of benefits to having Will pitch. His insanse Strikeout to walk ratio, his inexplicable black hole-like gravity well that gets so many 1-3 put outs, and if your a fielder, you get to stand around and get a nice farmer's tan for about an hour and a half most games. However, one of the biggest benefits that few but me appreciate is how easy it is to write game stories when Will pitches, because the opposing offense doesn't get to do anything to write about.

Will held the Ducks to just 5 hits and 1 run, and thanks to the courteous mindfulness of his defense, ever aware of his precious ERA, it was an unearned run. 8 Ks vs. 1 walk, and he snagged 5 assists as a pitcher, which, if your counting, is 13 of the game's 21 outs. I don't think Danny had a ball even threaten his area of operations in left. Not to be overshadowed by Brenden's big day, Will had a quiet milestone of his own, picking up his career 40th win with that performance. Only 7 other pitchers in the TCMABL since 2007 can claim as much, and none have done it in as few starts. When you're done congratulating Brenden, make sure you give a shout out to another all time legend and all around good dude for continuing to climb the ladder to TCMABL immortality.

Now, I'm writing this without the benefit of the book because I'm at work and this is the only way I can get paid for running the website, so fans of the play by play style of writing are going to have to be dissapointed this week. Here's what I can tell you from memory. After a 1-2-3 first inning, we looked like we might be headed for a pitcher's duel. Barrels started finding the ball in the second though, as the Bombers would spot a 4 run lead after the second that would hold the rest of the game, with a few runs tacked on between there and the 7th to close out the Bomber's second sweep of the year with a 7-1 victory.

Big afternoon for Kai Goellner (2-3, 2R, 2B, 2 RBI), Will Grodzicki (1-4, 2 RBI), Alex Gabriel (2-2, 2R, 2B, SB), and Trevor Copeland (2-2, RBI, R).

The Bombers move to 6-4 on the year, are in sole possession of 2nd place in the division, and are matched up against the Krunch next Sunday, finally back on the field of fever dreams; Stan Cyson Field at Northeast Athletic Park. We're not really sure what improvements have been made to the field, but my guess is that one of them will not be a Minneapolis City staff member present to unlock the cages. No worries though, the wiffle balls seem to be working out for us pretty well. From all of us at the Nation, this is the OG Bomber signing off for the week, look forward to seeing you all next Sunday!

2015 Recap

Don't turn in those Hamm's Hankies just yet, Bombers sweep in week 11 and earn a 5 seed!

Never an easy thing to have your backs against the wall, vying for a playoff spot against the 2015 division champions, but the Bombers pulled it out, thanks to great pitching, solid defense, and some timely hitting.

Will and Tanner both kept the high powered Tiger offense at bay with rock solid performances. Both pitchers go the distance, with will striking out 10 and allowing just one early run and 3 hits, and Tanner works around one pitching mistake in the 4th, striking out 5 while walking just 1.

Early lead in game one provided by Alex Selime's 2 RBI single, and Brenden's blazing T-Rex speed. He can't see you if you don't move.

A tight contest through 5, the Bombers would break open game one with back to back RBI singles by Copeland and Copeland, plating Max and Frank and securing the game one victory behind a great pitching performance by Will, and flawless defense play.

Game two was a close contest throughout. The Bombers would nab the first lead, scoring a run in the third off of what I believe was an RBI single by Gabriel, the book is uncler.

After the Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead through 5 and a half, with runs hard to come by, things started to get tense. Brenden and Alex S. would start out the 6th with getting on base via a walk and error, respectively, and all of a sudden the Bombers were in business. Helped along by a few wild pitches, with a runner on third and down a run, Copeland would score Selime from third on an infield single, a type of hit he no longer thought himself capable of, and going into the seventh, the Bombers were poised for their first walk off win of the season.

With one out, Gabriel would work his way on first with a walk, and a deep line drive by Max nearly ended the game if not for a fielder's glove getting in the way, setting the stage for Brenden to be a hero with runners on first and third and still just one out. The hero, however, turned out to be gravity, as Brenden saw enough pitches to draw a wild pitch, and Gabriel was able to sprint into home for classic walkoff, Bombers style.

With the regular season at a close, we'd like to take a minute and honor some of the accomplishments of the Hamm's Heroes from the 2015 season, as some of your hometown Bombers have found themselves amongst the league's best. Congrats to the following players:

In Memorium; Nate Johnson

This week we make an official farewell to Nate Johnson, as we look back at his accomplishments in the last 3 years.

Besides having possibly the best and most drawn out recruitment story in Bomber's history, Nate was a perennial beast. In just three all too short years with the B's, he ranks in a tie at 3rd all time (with fellow retiree Doug Burger) in wins (8), with just 80.1 innings pitched. He is the only Bomber to pitch at least 1.1 innings per appearance without ever giving up a homerun. He is second only to Will Grodzicki in Ks/BB ratio at 3.15, made even more impressive by his 1.06 K/inning ratio. He is second all time in WIP, OBA, and ERA as well.

No slouch at the plate either, Nate ranks top 5 all time in home runs (2), SLUG% (.429), and RBI (31).

Wherever he is, we wish Nate the best, thank him for three great years, and will drink many a Hamm to his health!

Retiring player profiles in 2015:

This week we focus on Doug Burger. Doug has played with the Bombers for the last 6 seasons, and has been a routine face in the Bombers rotation and outfield, and has more doubles to shallow right field than anyone. He's also the holder of arguably one of the all time greatest plays in Bomber's history, the famous warning track 9-3 double play. He's among the Bomber top 10 in hits, doubles, and runs scored, and as a pitcher is third all time in innings pitched and wins, fourth in strikeouts, and has a commanding lead of walks allowed, a record that may stand for several years. As one of the longtime Bombers, we salute Doug for all his hard work and dedication and wish him the best in whatever the hell he's doing now. If anyone knows could you tell me so I can put that on here?

6/16/13 vs. Coyotes

Well Nation, the results are finally in. Prepare to be shocked and embarassed for your Bombers, as the blood tests results reveal some cringe worthy details about your favorite amateur baseball players. Here is the list as follows:

-Kareem Mroue: No illegal substances found, but 6 separate paternity tests can now be resolved.

-Jimmy Shoemaker: Tested positive for a type of steroid that has none of the benefits of steroids, but all of the side effects. Explains his violent GOT EM!!! outbursts.

-Max Selime: Hepatitis D. Since this is a new strain of Hepatitis, it will be named after Max. He opted for "Hepatitis Maximus".

-Adam Hunkins: No illegal substances found, but testers report that his DNA provided "more information than we needed to hear".

-Trevor Copeland: BOBC (Blood Oreo Blizzard Content) of .241. While not technically illegal, the league is investigating whether or not this could have provided an unfair advantage.

-Kai Goellner: Tested positive for renewable energy. Kai's blood will lead us into a brighter future.

-Will Grodzicki: Tested positive for Jesus Christ.

-Doug Burger: Doug's DNA tested positive for more diversity than the rest of the team combined. The results were also used to settle 3 paternity tests, two of which overlapped with Kareem's.

-Sam Shoemaker: Sam's DNA revealed a severe predisposition to asian women. Researchers believe this could be used unfairly were any asian women ever to show up to our games.

-Brenden McGibbon: No illegal substances found, but tests revealed that Brenden has testicular cancer. As a result, Brenden has vowed to start taking steroids, bike more, and win 7 TCMABL championships. Researchers believe a follow up test may be needed in the future.

-Frank Nelson: Tested positive for heterosexuality. Researchers remain confused about his choice to wear low cut V-necks.

Andrew Granias: DNA tests revealed a new kind of steroid, since named Granioasterone, which causes the user to run at extreme speeds, but only after air swimming for a few seconds.

-Nate Johnson: No findings. It is believe that someone has tampered with Nate's DNA test. *CouJIMMYgh*

Alex Gabriel: Alex tested positive for illegal amounts of rogaine. He will be placed on a three day suspension, retroactive to Monday, June 17th. Since we only play on Sundays, his suspension will not affect any game time.

7/17/10 vs Orioles

As mentioned earlier, this game was also a goodbye to a longtime Bomber fixture, Joe Masrud. Joe has spent 7 years as the team's manager, giving way this year to Jimmy Shoemaker as he prepares to head back to school in the latter part of this month. Joe's contributions to the team, both on and off the field, have been more than instrumental in keeping things here together. Without Joe, there's no Bombers. It can't be understated how much time, effort, and money Joe has put into this team, and to say he will be sorely missed is not even fair. Speaking for myself, Bombers past and present, and anyone who's ever bothered to notice this team exists, thank you Joe. You're contributions will never be forgotten, and we wish you the best of luck. Here's hoping to see you back here again someday!

Joe leaves the team as the all time leader (since stats have been archived in 2007, and among archived pitchers with at least one inning pitched per team game played) in innings pitched (207.2), strikeouts (148), ERA (5.98), OBA (.292), WHIP (1.58), and perhaps Joe's signature stat, hit batsmen, with a whopping 32. He is tied for second all time in the league in that category. Some of those stats also put him in the top ten all time amongst the two 18+ divisions, IP and K's for two.

Offensively, Joe ranks 3rd all time in hits (61), 4th all time in runs scored (35), and second all time in steals (18). As you can see, His contributions off the field by no means overshadow his contributions on.
